The ego remains active in the state of unity in order to sustain individuality. However, it changes fundamentally in its operation. The ego moves from closed and enclosing operations that serve a self held apart, to open and opening operations that serve a self beheld as One. In other words, the nature and object of the ego's service will change with the creature's conception of itself.

When the creature knows and feels itself to be alone in a hostile universe, the ego will serve to protect the isolated individual. When the creature comes to know and feel itself as an aspect of the universal being, the ego will serve to advance universal development. Individual ego is not destroyed, but rather brought into alignment with the whole process of universal evolution. Individual gratification is not ended with the passage to unity, but magnified and enriched through its concordance with the gratification of the whole self.
